JJ Frowde established the pharmacy / optican at
Windsor Road 1884. The business was handed down
to his nephew Bert Hemensley and then to Bert's
son John who had gained his pharmacy
qualification in 1947. John continued to
run the business and gradually retired and handed to day to day running of the business to his son Ian, including all the recipes for traditional remedies from Mr Frowde's
original formulae.
Ian graduated from Manchester
University in 1994 with a 2:1 honours degree and returned to the Island in 1997 to manage the family business after working in Manchester Royal Infirmary. After two years of further study, he completed a clinical diploma in
December 2002. This involved distance learning, study weekends and a three month placement in Birch Hill Hospital, Rochdale. In 2006 Ian completed a prescribing course at Leeds University and became the Island's first Prescribing Pharmacist. He currently looks after a number of hypertensive and asthmatic patients and runs minor ailments and sports injury clinics.
Nicki
joined us in September 1998 and successfully
completed her counter assistant's course within
the first year. She completed the NPA dispensary Technician's course in 2004 and now has responsibility for dispensing the majority of patients' repeat medication, for the supply to Nursing and Residential Homes and for stock control in the dispensary.
Margaret
joined us in September 2002. She
is a trained medicines assistant so can give
advice in all over-the-counter medicines and is
also responsible for the stock control in the
shop.
Faye
joined us in September 2007 as a full time Dispensary Assistant, to assist Ian with administration and with his rôle as Secretary of the Isle of Man Pharmacy Contractors' Association. She is currently undertaking the Medicines Assistant training course so she can also advise patients on purchases of over the counter medicines. Faye is also responsible for the prescription collection service from the surgeries.
