A TRIBUTE A likeable, extremely friendly and ever-reliable gentleman, John will be known to many people in central and upper Douglas as the chemist on Windsor Road. He took over the business from his father several decades ago and only in the last few years handed over the reins to his son Ian. But John remained heavily involved in the business, indeed he never retired and still helped Ian with the preparation of prescriptions up until shortly before being admitted to hospital in mid-November 2006 suffering with a throat problem. His stay in hospital was only brief and his death was sudden and unexpected John was equally amiable in sport. He loved his badminton, was an avid follower of the TT and a committed Evertonian. John was for many years the linkman between the Isle of Man Badminton Association and the local media, compiling reports for the Green Final, the Manx Star in the 1970s and in latter years the Manx Independent. He also supplied regular round-ups of the action for Manx Radio. A member of the IoM Badminton Association executive for many years, the president since May 2002, he was also an Island selector alongside his good friend Frank Anderson for a decade or so in the late 1980s early 1990s. The John Hemensley Memorial Fund has been set up to raise money in John's memory for causes which were close to his heart. Already donations have been made to Nobles Hospital Diabetes Centre and the Isle of Man Motorsport Helicopter Funds. |
